C.A.R.E./Child Abuse Resource and Education is a Christian, board-directed, non-profit organization that educates the community about child abuse and its prevention. By providing education and support services to families living in poverty, C.A.R.E. strives to alleviate some of their life stresses and empower them to focus on family growth and sustainability.
C.A.R.E. works in low-income, rural communities including, Halifax, Warren, and Northampton counties. Many families of these communities are living in poverty and under extremely stressful conditions. As a result, the children of these families are at risk of being victims of poverty-induced neglect. C.A.R.E. works with these high-risk families, providing them with education, mentoring, and support in effort to increase the welfare of their children and , ultimately, strengthen the families themselves.
C.A.R.E. has been serving families in need for over 10 years. During this time, the organization has received tremendous support from its community. Through local fundraisers, private donations, and many hours of hard work provided by the organization's Board of Directors and volunteer staff, C.A.R.E. has touched and changed the lives of so many families. However, the poverty-induced needs of the communities have increased. In effort to meet these needs, C.A.R.E. has undergone a new phase of growth. In September 2004, C.A.R.E.'s first-every community resource facility "The John 3:16 Center," opened its doors to the community. The center is available to all members of the community, and offers the same family support services the organization has always provided, as well as several new services. These new programs include an after-school check-in service and tutorial, structured programs and activities for children, free summer day camps and family enrichment programs. The organization's overall vision for "The John 3:16 Center" is that it will continue to be a community-wide, centrally located resource center providing opportunities for parental and community involvement in the lives of their children. The organization looks forward to continuing to have the resources, the space, and most importantly, the hearts and hands it needs to serve more families in need.
