A total of 13,866 hot, noon-day meals were delivered to homebound elderly persons in Roanoke Rapids by volunteers and to a congregate meal site in Roanoke Rapids during 2010. This was made possible by the funding of a Meals on Wheels Site Manager through the Roanoke Valley United Way. The meals were delivered each day, Monday-Friday. There were 2,446 of the 13,866 meals delivered to homebound clients in Weldon. This Site is managed by volunteers.
Halifax Regional Medical Center is the food service contractor through the Older Americans Act and the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Government.
The food was brought to the Lloyd Andrews Building, which is located beside the U.S. Post Office, in bulk, then monitored and packed into route carriers by the Coordinator, Gail Garner. The volunteer staff then delivers the meals to the homebound participants. The congregate clients wre fed at the meals on wheels site.
In order to qualify for home delivered meals, a person (according to the Older Americans Act) must be 60 years of age or older, unable to prepare a hot meal and has no one in the home to prepare a hot meal for them. There is no charge for the meal; however, a contribution of $.50 per meal is suggested to generate program income to help increase the number of available meals.
