There are many children within our community in great need of educational encouragement and support beyond the classroom.  These children need extra help with their academic work, specifically reading and math skills.  Partners:  Today & Tomorrow, Inc., a non-profit corporation, is an after-school homework support program in cooperation with the public schools of Roanoke Rapids.  The program offers structured tutoring to selected students who, due to today's classroom demands, are not being provided with the individual attention that they need to succeed.

• In the 2009-2010 school year, Partners served over 25 students at Belmont Elementary School from grades 3-5.
• The program is in its 12th year at Belmont Elementary School.
• The Director of Partners is Anne Barfield.  She is the only person that receives compensation.
• The Director coordinates the student participants, their teachers, parents, volunteers, and the HCC Work Study students.
• Partners is supported by the Roanoke Valley United Way, local churches, civic organizations, Belmont PTA, and fundraisers.
• The Roanoke Rapids Graded School District is a huge supporter of Partners and they provide meeting space at Belmont Elementary School.  They also provide snacks and bussing home for the students.
• The children are provided a daily snack and 2 1/2 hours of tutoring.   They also have a special activity one Friday per month.
• Partners uses over 15 tutors to meet with children on Monday-Thursday of each week during the school year.  Each tutor donates one or more hours per week of volunteer services.  Tutors/Volunteers are the backbone of this program, making this service to the children possible.  No special training is required to be a volunteer tutor.  Presently volunteers come from the following areas:  Chaloner Middle School, Roanoke Rapids High School, Halifax Community College, and adults from all walks of life.
